TomTom XXL Classic 5″ Sat Nav, A Fantastic Piece of Equipment

Works fine, but had problems registering. Apparently i was not the only one acording to the internet. This satnav is an impprovement on the previous ‘xl’ that failed and did not cost much more than a repair on the old one whould have done.

A very simple and straight forward device to use, which is what you want when none technical people have to use it – kind of point and shoot. Like the easyport feature big improvement over old cradles, have previous borrowed parents old tomtom one with old bracket and found it more awkward when removing and storing or taking out of the car. The new mount is very small in profile, but works very well. Like previous reviews, the maps aren’t the most up to date, i’ve found new roads that are over 2 years old not on the system. The only real problem i had was with updating the map, which you can do for free within 1st 30 days. A big word of warning, before undertaking this make sure you back up your device onto your computer. I had massive issues with downloading the update. A previous reviewer mentioned 4 hours, mine took over 6 hours and then crashed, leaving my device with no map. (my broadband is reasonably fast and pc is too).

Reliable and clear with great screen and easy to set up. Works like a dream, easy to set up, good battery life & in car charging simple.

We used this to get to a remote location in france and it took us to the front door. My only gripes are the awkward socket on the the bottom is difficult to get the power lead in and tom tom don’t seem to update their system very often. Despite regularly updating the tom tom it still doesn’t recognise road changes that were implemented several years ago.

We bought this device to road trip around europe and put it through it’s first trip last weekend. The device seems easier to use than the tomtom classic and i like the changes that they have made to the interface. It seems that it’s always less than three clicks to get to the functionality that you want. The lane assist feature is also really good and i like the new layout of the information at the bottom of the screen while driving. My only gripe is that you cannot enter latitude and longitude coordinates on this device. I have even contacted tomtom to confirm this because i thought it must be in the menu options somewhere. So that for me is the only failing. It’s also a bit difficult to enter map corrections and i don’t think i would be able to do that while driving, but since it’s a rarity it’s not a major concern. Also be aware that the text to speech is only available on the computer generated voices and not on the human recorded voices.

TomTom XXL Classic 5″ Sat Nav with Western Europe Maps (22 Countries) (discountinued by manufacturer) : The tomtom xxl works as advertised, gets you from a to b. Problems arose when i tried to use the map guarantee, the home software told me there was a new map available for my device. When i went to download the map, it told me it was not compatible.Logged a support ticket, they advised me to take a full backup (takes 1hr+ via usb) and then reinstall the software and remove the map from the device. After this the home software told me there was no map available for my device. I then copied the map from my backup back to the device (1hr+ waiting time again). This got the device functionality back to its original state. I tried the download again, i got the error message again. I downloaded the map manually using the full url listed in the error message.

Easy to use with a big screen. This has served us as a great sat nav for a while now. The big screen really helps when you can only glance at the screen and the instructions make it so easy to use. To date, we have had no issues with inaccuracies, but we have kept it up to date. A great product that is certainly worth the money.

I’ve been regularly using this tomtom for the last 3 years, and have found it to be a reliable and effective item. Although it’s described as being able to provide routes for western europe, i’ve only used it for mainland britain – and it’s always provided a route. The built-in programming is a little outdated – and any road changes that have taken place within the last few years won’t be known to this device, so you’ll need to update the software accordingly. The screen is plenty large enough, and very clear to view. You can view the road layout in either 2d or 3d. Using either option, you get to see the road you’re travelling on, as well as arrows pointing in the direction you’re heading. The voice-over is a useful navigator, and helpfully guides you. Telling you well in advance of which directions you need to take. The info on screen lets you know your speed, the distance to your destination, and your expected time of arrival.

Leaves garmin eating dust, awesome. Initially had a 6 year old tom tom one sat nav, but failed to charge, attempted to go with garmin on recommendation, but should have gone back to tom tom as garmin sat navs in my expereince are useless, they count down in feet where as tom tom count in metres and are just a poor design. The tom tom xxl seems a beast of a machine, typed in the postcode for two destinations and both occasions, not one problem. Stay away from garmin and let tom tom, take you on a journey you’ll not forget.
