Good to use; beware windows/explorer users. I upgraded to the 820 at christmas from a good old tomtom 1 2nd edition and overall i’m pleased with the outcome. Positives: bigger screen, lane guidance is great, auto switching between night/day colours. Negatives: annoying that the lack of internet explorer 9 support isn’t clearly stated on their faq, the micro usb connector is in a fiddly location for those of us who disconnect after use for security. I think i now understand why so many users have a bad experience with upgrades. It is documented on the tomtom forums (when you search hard enough) that there were some issues with microsoft, and rather than dwell on those, the solution is to make mozilla firefox your default web browser, so when the mytomtom application seeks updates on their website it actually ‘reveals’ them and automatically dowloads them onto the device. (on ie9 it looks as though it is doing something when it isn’t). I’m now on a 3rd round of updates that get notified as a pop up when booting up my pc (windows 7) and on connecting the device causes them to just download with no further prompting from me. So i’ve got a good working solution, but it shouldn’t have taken the customers to figure out these issues, let alone having to switch to a less well known browser.
Does exactly what it says on the tin. Bought this 825 to replace my damaged 3 year old tomtom 930 which has been faultless on every occasion – including 2 long road trips in the usa. Like most, i read hundreds of reviews from a really long list of ‘versions’. Finally chose the tomtom 825. Worked well straight from the box. Shame many of the older functions are being removed from newer models – not sure why they are doing this when there so many ‘basic options models’ for those out there that want them. New fixed mount is a lot stronger, although you do need a bigger case to accomodate this. Google search option is a very useful function.

Item as described and delivery was quick.
Good durable unit, easy operation, clear maps. Tomtom site is not easy to navigate for expensive map upgrades.
The live update feature is really worth having. Ok starting with the upsidesit’s neat and the new design which incorporates the holder is cleverthe live feature is really worth having. The first time i used it i was going to a concert, we were late and after setting the destination and getting onto the motorway within a few minutes it was suggesting an alternative route. I thought this can’t be right, so i ignored the instruction and within less than half a mile of passing the junction it suggested i should come off at, the traffic ground to a haltnegativesthe new design incorporating the holder makes it a little fiddly to attach to the screen, but when attached its stablethe big negative for me was the power cable connection. Its really hard to fit it into the unit and does not seem very stable when it is fixed in. You can not do it when the unit is attached to the screen, apart from that its ok.
TomTom GO LIVE 820 4.3″ Sat Nav with Europe Maps (45 Countries) : Brilliant and awful at the same time. Have had this for a few weeks now so thought i would share my experiences with others. Firstly, as to the device itself, it is absolutely brilliant. So far it has worked flawlessly, selecting routes quickly and informing me of any delays on the journey, which have all been very accurate. My only slight niggle is the volume of incoming phone calls via the bluetooth, which is too quiet and i haven’t figured out how to increase it yet, any suggestions gratefully received. Otherwise, the device itself is first rate. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the tomtom software supporting the device, basically it is confused, confusing and generally awful. My old device was updated using tomtom home software, this one, you are told on purchase, to use mytomtom for updates. On initially going to the website it suggests that this model is not compatible with the software but apparently it is. It certainly seemed not to be compatible to start with as i couldn’t get it to work at all.
