Although tomtom updates web-site is not as reliable as it should be.
Let down by windscreen mount ***update***. I have changed the star rating from 4 to 1 as this unit is no longer a good buy at the current prices. You can now get a later model tom tom for far less money and even european maps. I would get one with the new windscreen mount. I have left in my original review below which would still stand if the price was drammatically reduced. I bought the go 520 after reading about the latest map guarantee. The update was simple so now, for just under £110 inc delivery (amazon market place – gps deals), i have a 520 with the latest maps, speed camera update, iq routes and lane assist. Plays audio (books or music) through the inbuilt fm transmitter and an offer to down 2 audio books for free (details after listening to the samples provided).

The unit itself is quite robust and is good when it works. But, tomtom’s software, especially updates, is riddled with bugs leading to very real frustration when things that did work do not after any firmware, software, map update.
I’ve just read some of these reviews and am surprised at some of the views and problems – i love minenot had it long and decided to treat myself as my old satnav was well past it’s sell by date. I spent a lot of time prior to my purchase researching the various brands and models, i wanted one that would allow me to use my phone handsfree and play mp3s/audiobooks and decided to go for this one. My mobile phone was easy to set up and works well via bluetooth (model: samsung) but i’d suggest anyone thinking of buying this, check on the tomtom website for compatibility as others seem to have problems. Fm receiver – set up was a doddle (once i’d worked out how to get my standard renault cd/radio to manually search step by step rather than automatically find the next fm station – and believe me that took some doing) the sound is clear as a bell with no interference which is great as i love playing mp3 audiobooks on long journeys. Using additional sd card for mp3’s did have me foxed for a while – but soon found the answer on google and created a folder called ‘mp3′ on my sd card and dragged them into there. Individual albums/audiobooks are placed in their own folder within this folder. Voice recognition – works instantly for me every time and must admit i use it all the time. Satnav itself hasn’t taken me wrong yet – map correction worked for the closed off road just round the corner from my house and no longer routes me that way. 3’ screen gives a clear view of the road ahead and the lane guidance at motorway merges is really good. Plenty of warning is given for speedcameras and usefully also indicates the speed limit. It’s not fallen off the windscreen yet – though looking at the other posts, i’ll expect that to happen in the future. (thinking about buying the airvent holder) update: bought one – definitely recommended, no more tell-tale suction marks on the windscreenno problems with the tomtom home software – just connected it up to my pc and automatically installed the latest software and updated my maps and speedcameras. Another great feature is the backup facility and that was one of the first things i did – very handy should i mess up.
Help save your money, obtain some thing else. I bought a single of these for the new characteristics like mapshare and voice recognition. Even so bluetooth on my unit like numerous some others is ineffective with man or woman you are calling only listening to a buzzing sounds. At 1st tomtom admitted the problem and reported an enhance would resolve. Now, two months afterwards they will exchange for mend but extensive delays owing to no units that in fact get the job done correctly. Mapsharenice plan but only certain modifications surface quickly on your machine. Onlyblock/unblock streetreverse targeted traffic directionchange street namesmissing poichanged poiare claimed to perform and no poi corrections i have at any time manufactured have appeared. So spherical-abouts, no still left turns, no ideal turns only seem some time in the future or probably when you invest in a map upgrade. Certainly you even now have to get maps every year to keep map share functioning. Also dash mount has no power or knowledge link so you have to plug these into the foundation of the unit.
TomTom GO 520 Satellite Navigation System With UK & Ireland Mapping : This new design has all of the great feature you expect from tomtom but coupled with a more usable mounting system and a great widescreen display. Both myself and my wife spent a large amount of time investigating the various models on the market and found the features and ease of use of the tomtom go 520/720 were clearly the best available. Coupled with the ipod cable i can now use both my tomtom and ipod through my car radio and not have difficulty hearing instructions over the music. On the downside my mobile phone, an orange spv3100, does not want to work with the hands free option provided; this is a bit of a disappointment to an otherwise perfect solution.
