TomTom Go 400 Eu : New, improved, great!

A natural choice following the death of my old tom tom go 710, this is, on the whole, a very worthy successor. Yes, the interface is totally different (and we all hate change, don’t we) but it is a vast improvement, with excellent graphics and some very subtle but clever and useful extra touches. I have only one complaint with this beast, and that is that my computer is unable to recognise that it is connected and switched on – regardless of whatever usb port i connect it to. I have been in it since 1982, and this is the first time any piece of peripheral equipment has beaten me (so far, anyway). I have tried everything – checked usb drivers/cables/sockets, used every possible permutation of all the various elements, and still it is completely ignored by my pc (which was running win 8. 0 and has since been upgraded to win 8. 1 – still without successful coupling of the tom tom 600 ) i have no doubt that at some point i shall be able to solve the problem (or it will solve itself). In the meantime i can only give it three stars because i am unable to update the information on it conveniently and quickly. Obviously this is not a universal problem, so please don’t let it put you off buying one – i think i have just been unlucky owing to a (so far) pc configuration.

I’ve had a fairly ancient tomtom xl for years and it was time for a change. I’ve researched this one heavily and now that it’s out of the box i like what i see. I’m kind of amazed by the number of negative reviews coming from people on the basis that it’s ‘new’. So, let’s address that; take a deep breath and prepare yourself; it’s new, so won’t be like your old tomtom because, er, it’s new. The menus are intuitive, the address system is more ‘human’ and not so fixated on postcodes which as we all know gets us into trouble if you are going out of built up areas. It’s far easier to review the route you are taking with the pinch and zoom facility (compared to my antique xl that is). You can add places to the route you are taking, which seems sensible. The traffic and speed camera services on this needs you to connect to your phone.

Which model should i go for, or should i buy an older model?. Tomtom go 600 v 400 v older devices. Interface and features:first impressions of when i reviewed the new 600 and 400 were mixed. The interface has had a radical overhaul, many users of older devices will find that moving through the menu items will be a definite learning experience. Nothing is where you would expect to find it, sub-menus are not always apparent and the drivers screen information has been radically altered. There are less choices, only one icon for your car pointer, only one style of map display and a number of less value features are not there, no voice activation, no where am i and no built in sim card. The new 600 is the same device as the 400 only it has what i can only describe as a huge screen, i really do mean it is huge but this has huge benefits too as i will explain later in the review. Mounting the device:the 600 departs from having a built in fitted windscreen mount. The suction pad mount is a separate part, the 600 fits onto the mount and is held in place by a pretty hefty magnet. You will have to give a good pull to remove it.

I just used it for a 900 km trip through ireland, from belfast to dingle and back. The tomtom was ok, we didn’t get lost or anything, but the info on gas stations and public parkings is poor. Before starting we downloaded the last version of the maps from tomtom, but in small towns (dingle, killarney, etc) the parkings were simply not there. We were standing in one and the device directed us to the nearest one. Apart from that, the thing is ok. Although they have eliminated some useful options from the older version of the program, like to show how many satellites are online, and a few others.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Good device, shame about the software
  • Tomtom Go 500 EU
  • Accurate sat nav that does what it’s supposed to!

I previously owned a tom tom live and thought the traffic on it was great when it worked but the service on it was very unreliable and often would not connect. After a year the gps was broken and kept disconnecting even after an update so i had to get another, i was also reluctant to renew my traffic for £50 when it did not allways connect anyway. I use the device every day and all day and despite those issues i do like tom tom. I decided to look at the garmin stuff and the new line tom tom stuff (as despite my previous one i do prefere them to garmin) and i have to say the slick look of the go 500 drew me too it, it looks very nice and the screen is very well done. I no longer need to pay for traffic updates as its all free through my mobile tethering. The traffic does not really use up much phone data so no worries there and the service connection has also been much more reliable than my live one was. I was also not bothered about it not working as a hands free phone speaker as i never find them to work very well anyway and always hard to hear and for people to understand you. Its a satnav not a hands free unit, that’s how i see it. I have heard some negative reviews regarding its lack of options and configuration capabilities but for me you dont need your satnav to be a laptop or a smart phone, you just want it to do its job and do it well.

Accurate sat nav that does what it’s supposed to. I’ve not used tom tom sat nav’s before, but i’ve heard good things about them. Upon opening the box, the sat nav looks very nice. Not too big, so it will fit in your pocket when you get to your destination. For me, a sat nav only really serves one real purpose and that’s to get you to your destination. I’m pleased to say that this one does that, and it does it well. The map is really clear and easy to read and the unit itself is very simple to input an address and away you go. It gives good instructions well in advance of junctions etc. The 3d maps is a bit of a gimmick, i haven’t bothered with it to be honest. I like the fact that you can download 4 or more updates per year to keep the maps up to date, although most other sat nav’s offer this nowadays.

Hey, it’s actually pretty good. Very different to older system. You just need to get use to it i’m afraid. The main thing is it is very good at avoiding traffic, comes up with some really sneaky routes (i’m london based)some really cool things went missing but are gradually coming back, that’s goodthey are updating features all the time. Updating maps takes forever, sometimes doesn’t work, just had to call tomtom as i had no maps (corrupted) on the 400 but they sorted it. You get people moaning about little things that it doesn’t do any more, but i think it’s a better system. What is a real pain is that this model does not have a built in sim, so you must link every time to a smart phone. Did i just moan about a little thing?. Oh and also you have to use your finger rather than a pen to touch the screen.

Receeded and the back up from tom tom is poor to say the least they charge almost what the. The female connector within the tom tom very quickly receeded and the back up from tom tom is poor to say the least they charge almost what the sat nav cost to repair it and contacting tom tom i s a nightmare. I will consider other makes in future.

Great value for money, this was an upgrade from an old tomtomone and it’s great. Essential for me when adventuring around britain, free updates are also a great feature.

So there seems to be a lot of negativity about this device, and the main reason i can see for this is people hate change. The software is totally new, yes, but change doesn’t mean worse. With free updates, traffic, speed cameras and and active cradle (i really wasn’t expecting this) it’s a great deal. The device looks great, the cradle is solid, and the fact you can keep the cable plugged into the cradle and just remove the device is a massive plus for me. I like the new menu, it’s very different to the tomtom of old but once you find your way round it’s good. People complain that you can’t select a house number after entering the postcode. Simply by putting a space after the postcode then entering the house number will take you to the door. Different, yes, easier, yes. Syncs perfectly with my iphone and finds its way around traffic jams. I like the display on the right that shows how far the next speed camera or petrol station is. You can search it’s built in list of poi’s and you can add your own points on the map and save them. I have previously used a slightly older tomtom and the only negative over the older model is some of the directions at motorway junctions don’t seem quite so clear, but again it’s just a case of getting used to it. All-in-all a great looking, well built, functional device.
