This is one of the very few sound bars/sound bases that will connect to bluetooth (bt) headphones. The ability to accept streams from a tablet or phone requires a bt receiver function. You are pretty well guaranteed that but for bt headphones a sound base needs to have a transmitter option too. This one does though my sony ht-x1 sound base doesn’t. As i have an expensive pair of b&w bt headphones i’d have liked to have known in advance. I couldn’t connect to the router for a firmware update. Changing tack i downloaded the file to a usb stick on a computer from the sony website and had the update done in a few minutes. It is an excellent piece of kit but has a lot of options to get to grips with. Once set up properly the sound quality is outstanding.
Support for hd audio formats and excellent music playback then this is the device for you. If you want a sound base with loads of connectivity options, support for hd audio formats and excellent music playback then this is the device for you. This replaces an aging (and sometimes unreliable) sony 5. I was worried i’d miss the true surround effect but in truth the superior performance of this device in all other areas makes up for it. After a few teething troubles both googlecast and spotify connect work really well.

Sometimes it’s worth paying out more for quality. First things first, before i write about the product itself, a quick word on packaging. There is just enough packaging to keep the unit safe whilst in transit, but not too much so that you’re surrounded by cardboard and foam once unboxed. It was easy to get into, but a note of caution for when you remove it from the box – it is quite heavy so do it whilst the box is laying flat and be careful where you pull it from as the fascia is detcahable and nearly came off in my hand. Once plugged in, it connects very quickly via bluetooth to my phone and was very easy to connect. Installation is a very quick process. There are only a few controls on the unit, and they are of the sensitive pad type so there aren’t any buttons or nobs sticking out which could easily be broken off. In fact, it is that simple to set up and install i didn’t even have to refer to the instructions, but for a more well rounded review i have looked at them and have found them to be easy to understand – you don’t need a degree in electronic acoustics in order to understand them should you choose to use them. The sound is absolutley crystal clear, and as you would expect from a bass speaker of this price, the bass is as clear as a whistle and does not become boomy or distorted even when played at quite a high volume. It is very easy to control the bass levels seperatley as the subwoofers have their own volume control.
Straight out of the box you can feel this is a quality product. There is a good weight and feel. Connecting and setting up the base speaker is simple enough, though there is a guide to help you here. We chose to set the speaker on the shelf below the tv, as the shelves are made from toughened glass and we were uncertain of the weight limit for both the tv and base speaker. The sound through the tv is great. Not surround sound, but good enough to draw you into the movie further and the rich deep sounds emitting from the downward facing drivers puts a smile on your face. You do have control over the amount of base, but not of the middle and treble. The blue tooth connecting is very simple and connects to an iphone, ipad etc and i believe you can have 9 such appliances recognised on the base speaker meaning connectivity is good.
Sony ht-xt3 soundbar compared to sony av receiver 5. 1 channel system. 1 channel system using a sony str-dh510 av receiver driving 5 speakers positioned around the room and a subwoofer. I was interested to see how this 2. 1 channel soundbar would compare, being more compact and without the need for all the wiring involved in connecting up various speakers, meaning it is so much more convenient. The ht-xt3 soundbar, (and i suspect all soundbars), does not create the surround sound achieved with speakers placed around the room including behind the viewer. Despite claims suggesting sound is bounced off walls and appears to come from behind you, this just does not compare. Neither does the maximum volume, although it is improbable that you would actually need more than the very adequate 350 watts the sony soundbar can put out. However, there are redeeming features, in particular the startling clarity of sound which makes my old system seem muffled by comparison.
Sony HT-XT3 2.1 Channel TV Base Speaker Compatible for High-Resolution Audio (350 W, S-Master HX, Clear Audio Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, Bluetooth and NFC) – Black : It did make an improvement over my sound bar that cost one third the price but not enough to justify its cost although it just deliver much better results whilst playing music over bluetooth and wow you. Bought this to replace my cheaper sound system. I was expecting more of a wow factor but after a year of use i still don’t hear this whilst watching tv. It did make an improvement over my sound bar that cost one third the price but not enough to justify its cost although it just deliver much better results whilst playing music over bluetooth and wow you can really crank up the volume.
