Great picture – suitable for mountain biking. I bought this camera after initially considering a top range go pro. All i wanted was a camera that could record in 1080p hd and that was suitable for mountain bike riding & this met my needs. The first time i tried the camera was on a cold day and i had issues with the case lens steaming up, however this was solved by washing it with some mild soap. I mount the camera to my vented mtb helmet using a helmet mount strap, as i can’t find a suitable place to stick the adhesive mounts. So far i am impressed with the footage i have recorded and it looks fine once uploaded to youtube. The gps function which allows you to add a graphic overlay to your recorded footage with the speed & a mini map is also a nice feature.
When i opened the box i could quite believe how small and light this is. Even with the provided waterproof case it fits easily in the palm of my hand (or pocket) and without it it’s tiny. It’s easy to see how this would work really well with any of the wearable accessories – you wouldn’t know it was there. Also being so streamlined and having such a small profile can only help limit movement from the air if you’re getting up any sort of speed. My first experience using this was attached to the inside of a plane for a flying lesson. I only used a cheap in-car phone holder to attach it to the window but even with the bumping, rattling and shaking going on the results were brilliant. Admittedly the user interface is a bit ‘basic’ but it is pretty intuitive and you probably don’t want to be messing about with settings too much when you’re hurtling down a mountain or whatever. Can’t comment too much on battery life but i filled a 16gb memory card using full hd with gps turned on and it didn’t run out, so fit for purpose so far. On top of this there were two bonuses i wasn’t expecting: how easy it was to pair with my iphone (using a free sony app) for use as a viewfinder and ‘remote control’ (invaluable); and the gps overlay option on the final video (cool).

The quality of this camera is superb and the film done so far is excellent. I have used it mountain biking with a sony vct-hm1 handlebar mount and am very impressed with the output. I haven’t had any other action cameras to compare but having read all the reviews of other contenders i must say i am very pleased with my purchase. I may buy the wrist control soon as this doesn’t have a viewfinder but it doesn’t really need one with the field of view beinf so wide. I have also used this to film the family of walks and found the steady shot feature very effective. I didn’t pick up speech very well, if you want a camera to record sound well i would purchase and external mic for this.
I really like this camera design could be improved ,it has given good results up to now ****.
Brilliant little camera, far better than the cheap gopro copies and not much more money than some of those. Same issue as gopros with the lens misting up when in water, but that is really the only downside. The picture quality is better than some of the gopro stuff that i’ve seen and connecting it to your phone to use as a viewfinder is a clever touch.
Sony HDR-AS30 Full HD Camcorder (11.9 Megapixel CMOS Sensor, Wi-Fi, NFC One Touch, HDMI) schwarz : Fairly good camera, some reservations. . I have a lot of mixed feelings about this camera, but overall, it’s very good, i have many point’s to make, so i’ll simply use headings and expand each point within. Video quality:the video quality is fairly good, i wouldn’t say it was quite on the level of some other action cameras such as the drift ghost or the gopro 4, but the price of £130 compared to the £300+ price tags of the others makes this instantly worth it, the 1080p 30fps video is very good, the colours are vivid, whilst not over saturated, the quality is sharp and crisp, and with a class 10 memory card it will happily record for hours without a problem. However, i wish i could have 1080 in that golden 60fps, maybe in a future firmware update. Playmemorys mobile app:i bought this camera with the intent to strap it to my motorcycle helmet, so obviously i need to be able to easily see where the camera is pointing, this app stands out brilliantly for that, being able to use my smart phone and at the tap of a button being able to stream video from the camera to the screen is brilliant. Top rated app, allowing me to change some basic settings and click record from the app is also a very useful feature that i’m glad was well implemented. Mounts:in my view at lest, they are utter tat, both the curved and the flat mount (both of which come with the camera, nice touch, or would be if they had worked) barely stuck to anything, they weren’t strong enough to hold the camera on, they would simply slowly come off whatever i mounted them too. Maybe i had bad luck, but for me at least, the standard mounts don’t work. I tried to use the curved mount to stick itself to my helmet, and came back the next morning to find the camera on the floor next to my helmet, and no loner attached, the best way to mount them i have found thus far, is to simply use industrial strength velcro, far superior to the standard mounts. Functionality:the camera, with the stock firmware it’s shipped with (i have yet to look for updates, i may update this review if i find some) comes with many features, many good, but some lacking.
