Good value for money, but some frustrating flaws. Bad:* the case is prone to steaming up after about 10 minutes use. I go kayaking and the coolness of the water exacerbates the problem. My friends with gopro 4 don’t have any issues. I have solved it using some of the gopro inserts (much cheaper than the sony ones) together with placing a silica gel sachet in the case and the camera when storing to make sure they are dry. Following these steps i’ve had no problems. (another suggestion is to use swimming-goggle anti-fog spray). * super slow motion (120fps) automatically slows your footage down and eliminates sound. I prefer to do this myself in post production. )* the play memories app for your phone won’t let you preview photos. You have to wait until your at a pc. * the port covers feel a little flimsy. I’m sure they are ok and the transparent outer case itself feels tough, its just you need to be delicate when the camera is outside the case. )* all the sony accessories are really expensive. There aren’t as many cheap replica / after-market accessories as their are for the gopro’s. * cant find out how to access the gps meta-data to get latitude / longitude information. * record light is tiny and rear facing only. My friends struggle to tell if its recording when i ask which can be frustrating.
I really like this camera design could be improved ,it has given good results up to now ****.

No slow or sslow in pal modes. . The good points, the unit is tiny, even with the waterproof case (5m depth). And it’s easy to operate the buttons even with the case on. The gps works well, and i really like the playmemories overlay of the gps data. I had to send mine back sadly for two reasons. 1/ the amazon warehouse condition wasn’t as described and had many items missing from the box. 2/ it does not do slow and sslow modes (60fps and 120fps) in pal mode, only in ntsc. This is subtly hidden in the instructions. I have since bought a hdr as-100vr and much happier, as it doesn’t have this later restriction, but it does cost more money, so i guess you get what you pay for. If you don’t need the slow motion modes, and want a cheap sports camera that’s swim-proof or for fitting to a mountainbike, but want gps data overlays, this would be a good basic option.
Great camera, as good as a top spec gopro. Great camera, bought this year for a ski trip and the footage is as good as a gopro. Doesn’t handle dark very well but not many of the action cams do. I bought spare batteries but didn’t need them, even in the cold mountain air the battery lasted the whole day with on off filming (wifi and gps off) sticky pads survived a battering as well, camera did not come off despite many falls. I chose it because i wanted the 120 frames per second option and the wifi which only comes with the high spec expensive gopro models. Slow motion is great except if you record at 120fps the footage is all in slow mo, but you can speed it up on a computer afterwards if you want. Overall this camera is exceptional value for money and i would highly recommend.
So far i am very happy with the purchase. Just what i needed to video my bird table. Think it should have a v at the end of the code as it does have built in gps.
Sony Full HD AS30 Action Camcorder with GPS : Would highly recommend a flat-door case for quality. . As i bought this with the intention of diving i also bought the “sony mpk-as3 underwater housing for action camera” for £35. 99 which is definitely a good investment. At least for me i needed it as it can go to depths of up to 60m (the default case is just 5m), but after testing the camera with the default case in a pool after getting it i was momentarily a little horrified by the bluriness of the images. The video was still pretty good, although not as clear as i would have maybe liked, but the images were just simply blurry. After looking online i found this to be a common problem, which can be rectified by buying a replacement ‘flat door’ which the other case i’d already bought had. I only tried it for the first time this weekend diving up to 26m and i was very pleased. The software is also very handy – i thought i was going to have to wait until monday morning to review the footage & images but i had happened to download the software to my smartphone and through wifi could view and copy the footage onto my phonethings to note:- if buying the replacement casing you must know that it is not possible to switch between the photo & video functions once the camera is in the case with this case (it is possible with the default case). You can only switch it on, and either start/stop recording or take images.
