Sennheiser MM 550-X BLUETOOTH HEADPHONES : Excellent headphones – but beware iPhone connectivity issues

Bluetooth Headsets

These were a gift for my wife who loved them but when they died before even a year was up, we were very disappointed. I myself found the sound pretty basic. Something like the bose qc3s as reference (though wired) are vastly superior. Also battery life was only a few hours: not up to scratch for long haul flights. Now we’re in the market for another pair and unfortunately cannot recommend them.

The bluetooth broke within the first week. Sent it back got the new one a week later and the noise cancellation broke. But still a really good headset, but i will never spend more than 100 euro on a headset again.

Amazing product and quality sound. Hefty price tag and there may be other headphones with better value for money but sennheiser is a premium brand with a great warranty.

Bought at £110, nice and light and produces clear sound with my ipod touch. Bluetooth works up to 10m away from device then starts to get a bit crackly. Sound appears better than my studio beats at half the price.

Features of Sennheiser MM 550-X BLUETOOTH HEADPHONES

Invisible microphone for crystal-clear conversations

Pros; great sound quality, long battery life (3-4 days use), good range, very comfortable and light on the head. Cons: noise cancellation is a bit rubbish, and diminishes sound quality noticeably, volume isn’t the loudest, plastic scratches easily. On balance, for the price i paid £110, these are a great pair of cans, lovely detail and a very well balanced sound stage. The fact the battery lasts so long, means you’ll be able to wear them until you’re tired of music, there’re that comfortablei bought them in the knowledge that noise cancellation wasn’t the best, it’s not a feature i’m mad about having in any case, so i wasn’t surprised when i found it lacking.

Best place to start with these headphones is the price point, its a little high but you do get exactly what you pay for. The sound quality is excellent and the issue with volume actually is not a problem, at least not for anything i have used the headphones on, through bluetooth i simply max the volume on my phone / bluetooth dongle and then use the volume control on the headset, and the headphones actually hurt my ears on full volume i am forced to lower it down slightly. (i have sensitive ears but these are no means quiet. )wired the headphones run in two modes, wired passive (battery on charge / turned off. ) in this mode the audio is passive and though great quality the volume is limited by the power of your device attached and thus i found for phones and similar the volume though fine could not get loud enough and none of the extra features such as noise guard functioned. (however it does tell you this in the manual and was expected. )wired + power, turning the headphones on so they are active rather than passive allows the volume to reach ear hurting levels once again, and the sound is beautiful, you can now use the noiseguard feature and the srs feature and the sound quality even with eveything enabled is amazing. (sound quality is best without noise guard and srs, but in a noisey environment they are very useful and work brilliantly. )talking on the headset works wonderfully well and the headset itself is very light and covers your ears fully. The sound is the best i have heard over bluetooth reguardless of using apt-x or not, though when using the better codec the sound quality is just as good wired or wireless and these are an amazing peice of kit, so long as they are used properly.

Ok – to start with let me say these headphones are not without their flaws. The srs setting is just plain weird and noise-cancelling mashes the sound quite impressively by removing the bass and making things sound rather hollow. That said, at the volume levels and kind of music to which i listen, any ambient noise is already many db down due to their snug design and ability to crank the volume to more than reasonable levels. As such, i don’t use the srs function at all and the noise reduction is amazing when used with audiobooks, or even just to dampen down the ambient noise at work (i have an air conditioner that i was just used to, but these things chop it out almost entirely when in their active cancelling mode – it’s eerie). The talkthrough function is a bit of a gimmick – it’s far easier just to pull one of the phones back behind your ear for any conversation. Audio-wise, they work quite nicely as a passive standard headphone with the included cable. When in active mode they also add amplification and noise cancelling if you want it to wired sources, which is a nice touch. Their main function – a bluetooth headphone – is generally superb. Range is good, the connection with my varied apple devices (iphone 5, ipad 3, mid-2011 imac, 2012 macbook pro) and the couple of android tablets i’ve tried is flawless and generally the device “does the right thing” with regards to audio codecs and so on. If you choose the headphone mic as the computer’s audio source, it does drop the headphones into hfp headset mode which knackers the audio quality, but that’s a limitation of the bluetooth spec, not the headphones themselves per se.

Make sure this fits
by entering your model number.

Light comfortable and rich sound. Only the noise cancelling is a disappointment – in comparison to how good the rest of the package is.

Had these headphones for a few weeks and extremely impressed. Bluetooth is crystal clear and range is awesome. I paid £99 from amazon after researching for months on a today deal but £169 would be a great purchase. I would have preferred momentum 2. 0 but the functionality and in-built technology makes these a sound choice. The negative reviews which mention the snapping the headband; i would love to see the size of those peoples heads as mine is x-large and copes extremely well.

Does fcae some connection issues from to time but it stabilizes overtime. Great battery life and very versatile in usage. These are my second pair and my first which i used for 5 years.

Direct cable option for use on airplanes, with an airline adapter included

I bought these for their noice cancelling abilities as i travel on aircraft a lot. The noise cancelling is beter than a standard airline issue headphone but not brilliant. They are very comforable and light to wear and you wont have sore ears in you fall asleep with them on. Bluetooth is very easy to use and the nice touch is the ‘mute’ function which means you dont have to remove them when cabin crew talk tou you. Would be better if the cary case was hardshell as you could damage them when try to squash into hand luggage.

I chose these because there is very little available when you want bluetooth and noise cancelling and full over ear comfort. In fact these are probably the only cans that do all three and for that they deserve five stars alone. The noise cancelling is pretty good, not as good as the bose quiet comfort 15, but perfectly acceptable. They are comfortable, again, i can wear the bose all day (and do quite often) and probably wouldn’t be happy in these all day, but for a few hours it’s not an issue. The battery life is dreadful, i’m guessing two hours maybe?. There is a three beep notification that you are low on juice, which comes about a minute before shut down, and as such is totally useless. It always happens for me at the beginning of a commute for some reason. I’ve docked them two stars just for that as without power these aren’t much use. I believe if you carry the cable you can plug them in and use them without power, but that totally negates the point of going wireless.

As already stated by other buyers these aren’t the cheapest headphones. That said the sound quality is simply fantastic. Had no trouble pairing these with my iphone and i found these to be a bit louder than my other pair (sennheiser mm400x). Simple to operate whilst on your head with all the controls being located on the right ear cup. Can’t really comment yet on the noise reduction function as i have only used them at home up to now. The surround sound works well but i personally prefer the sound with this switched off, all down to what type of music your listening to/personal preference i guess. The over ear design i’ve found to be pretty comfortable even after using for several hours non stop. Overall i can’t really say anything negative about these other than the price and the cost of a spare or replacement battery (£35.

Superb stereo sound neodymium magnets and patented duofol diaphragms for excellent sound reproduction

I love them and am actually looking forward to my next flight to test them out.

I have bought it and used it for about half one month. At first, you might feel it doesn’t deserve this price when you use it. But in china, it was sold for about 400 pounds. Also, by using it for a long time constantly, at least 100 hours, you would feel it performs better and better. This process you need try to use the earphone by different volume ranging from low to high little by little. It is restricted to play shocking music in a high volume at first. The longer you listen to the music by it, you would prefer it more. I hope these suggestions would help you to choose this earphone.

I have been a very satisfied user the mm 450-x headphones for several years. I wanted to try these around-ear headphones as my only complaint with the 450-x was that after many hours of use, there was some fatigue on my ears. In terms of comfort, these headphones are great. Functionally, they operate essentially the same way as the 450-x. They are very easy to connect to multiple devices, and the controls are conveniently located. The battery life is very similar to the 450-x, and they use the same battery. One note regarding the battery though. Although the physical battery is the same, they use a slightly different fascia. If you put the 450-x battery into the 550-x, the plastic fascia will not fit flush. However, if you are like me and purchased an extra battery, it comes with the fascia for both models of headphones.

Excellent headset that is very versatile. The only complaint i have is that it is so good at enclosing your ears that it may get a little warm inside when you are active (i wear them when i hoover for instance). Got them at an unbelievable price and they are well worth the money. I have used them on a cross atlantic flight and they were perfect for the trip; it cut out all the noise of those annoying shouting security people and made the in-flight entertainment sound a lot better. I even wore then while sleeping as they acted like earplugs (sleeping positions are very limited with them on however). Battery life is excellent as well and i easily get 8 hours or more out of them. Even when the battery is dead you can still use them to listen to music/movies just by plugging them in to the jack.

Sirs wow HD technology for wider, taller sound, with greater clarity and with a stronger bass

Disappointed by this, works well as bluetooth headphones but put on the noise cancelling feature which is what i bought this for, completely useless on your daily commute. You’re better off with the equally priced and better quality competitor.

When i saw these half price i decided to go for them. They still seem overpriced to me tbh, but at half price i can live with that. The noise cancellation is ok, but being active i think it needs louder noises than hums and rumbles. I was disappointed in the volume tbh and the manuals are not the most helpful, one of these diagrams only attempts. I think in hindsight, depending on your priorities, i would recommend the 400 or 440 perhaps, but it is still a quality product nevertheless and no regrets.

It has taken me some time to come to a conclusion on the sennheiser mm550x. They are a bit of a curates egg, good in parts, as they can be bluetooth, hard-wired, have noise cancelling, surround sound and are extremely portable. The noise cancelling and surround sound, are bluntly, not very successful, but overall, the portability, lack of wires and very acceptable sound, makes this a purchase, i can recommend. However, it is very expensive.

I bought these for the convenience but i wasn’t pleased with the overall sound, people that rate this as a 4-5 star really dont know what good quality headphones for this price range sound like. I gave this a 3 star because i got a really good deal on these.

Good quality sound + battery lasts for hours, great when your cooking in the kitchen and want some music .

I have looked at lots of headphones that i could control my ipod with, but nothing comes anywhere close to the sennheiser mm550-x. It dose everything i needed and more, i have not had chance to test the noise cancelling feature as yet. The head band tends to stick out quite a bit at the sides, perhaps to accommodate a large hair style?.I have spoken to sennheiser themselves a few times and they are excellent and very helpfull.

These headphones do the job very well though the battery tends to stop charging quickly and are expensive to replace. I have had 2 pairs of these and have had to buy 5 replacement batteries; unfortunately on both sets the headband has snapped in the middle and sennheisser no longer sells a replacement so i’ve to buy a new set. I may get some momentum or bose instead next time.

Fantastic, but easily broken. I bought one pair and was really happy, then the headphone band broke. To their credit sennheiser replaced them, and they sent me two pairs. I tried to send one back but they said don’t bother.A good result, and i gave a pair to my son. Now both of us have broken headbands. There are comments all over the internet about broken headbands. They are very good headphones, but expensive and they break.

I bought mine 5 years ago, within 2 years it fell to pieces. I bought insteas of the bose because back then the bose did not have a wireless option. First the noice cancellation stopped working, then it started to peel off, then the blue tooth would need to be re paired on every use, then the year pads split open and finally the headset snapped in two (it turned out to be made out if plastic instead if metal). They seem to be designed with a 1 year life. I now have the bose which are the same price and the noise cancellation is head and showlders better, you cannot begin to compare. The construction quality also seems at a completely different level. I cannot understand why anybody pay 300 pounds for these, even 30 pounds. I bought direct from amazon so i thiink that is unlikely.

I have used both the mm550-x and the mm450-x, the sound quality on the 450-x is much better. Had mine 5 years, developed an issue once, and sennheiser support was great. Price is crazy high, the strap on my 550-x had started to peel. Wouldn’t advise anyone to buy these now, no matter how cheap, as sennheiser have decided to discontinue the batteries rendering the headphones useless. I have deducted a star in the review for this.

Headband broke in the middle after 3 years of very light use, with minimal pressure. There’s no metal strip, just plastic. There are many reports of this happening on this model and sennheiser don’t want to know, even for a paid repair.

I love these for flights and home, making calls and listening to music occasionally but after 3-4 years am very disappointed that the outer layer is lifting off the head band like the much cheaper sharper image pair i replaced started to do, plus i just noticed that the ear muffs have also started to bare their foam inners on the inside of the ears. Very dissappointing as they work perfectly but drop bits off the headband now. For the price this should not happen.

I’m back, with my quest for a good headset. After getting two dysfunctional parrot zik 3 pairs i decided to start shopping around for different models. I was very excited about the 550x, but that quickly dissipated. First of all, let me tell you that if you’re even considering buying the 550x model instead of the 500x, don’t. The active noise cancellation is absolutely not worth the extra price – it’s extremely weak, especially compared to the zik 3. It looks extremely wide, very unusual, but it’s quite light and feels good on the ears. I have not worn it for extensive periods however, as i will be returning them pretty quickly. If you saw “direct cable option” and thought, as i did, that there was an usb fallback to this bluetooth headset, you’ll be disappointed.

I paid £110 for these in a sale but they still aren’t worth that much. The first pair i received were returned after a couple of weeks as they had developed a very loud crackling / static noise when using the noise cancellation in any environment (almost like the microphones were picking up and amplifying external sound rather than blocking it). The second pair were better, but even still i’m unable to use the noise cancelling on some (not all) trains, and i can’t use it on any plane. Unfortunately, the noise cancelling just can’t seem to handle the very loud noises and rather than just not working, it causes crackling / static noises. The only solution is to sit with my hand covering the external microphone. Otherwise my only other complaints match those of others; short battery life (around 6 hours), little warning of low battery, and only being able to connect one device (particularly annoying when i have bluetooth on my phone and pc, and it randomly chooses which to connect to)edit to lower the score:had them a year now and the ear pads are so poorly fitted that one have them has managed to fall off while the headphones were around my neck.

This is the most i have ever spent on a set of earphones i have about 5 other sets of bluetooth earphones which do not compare to the sennheiser the only set of ear phones i have is the bluedio which after a little more time they may come up to the same quality of the sennheiser earphones. The big downfall of the sennheiser is the cheap short life battery that comes with the earphones if you’re willing to pay around £42 for a spare and are made of money by all means buy a spare battery. What i done was buy a small power bank epctek 2600mah for £2-96 free postage on amazon. This should charge the battery on your earphones 5 or 6 times no problem. The power bank is so compact it will fit in your pocket no problem and can be used to charge the battery while listening on your earphones.

I wanted some bluetooth headphones and had no idea about the latest models or specifications. After asking someone younger than me, they said try sennheiser. I did some comparisons and looked at reviews etc, and decided to get the mm 550-x. These are an excellent choice for me. The sound is great, and the function buttons easy to use. The battery lasts as described and you can even use with the supplied jack plug lead if your battery runs low. I have used these with my ipad and android phone, both no problem to set up on bluetooth. Comes with a carry bag and power plug adopters.

These headphone just dont have noise cancellation. They barely cope with quiet background humming, no effect on actual noise like talking or the tv. Having used on a plane ride they did nothing to cut out the engine and ac noise if anything they made it worse. My in ear headphones did a much better job and these went back in their pouch. Bluetooth works as expected and sound quality seems fine to my non-audiophile ears. Seriously would return these (first item i would ever have returned) but amazon marked my account for review because of too many returns, no idea why.

Their sound quality never seemed wonderful. But they went on to develop a distinct crackling and a very iffy bluetooth stability. Perhaps i just got an end-of-shift pair, but the overall impression was one of disappointment – especially as my other sennheiser headphones have given excellent service over many years.

I found these headphones rather disappointing for the price due to there bog standard sound, plasticy feel (and not good quality plastic either), and just poorly designed features. Also i have been using my headphones for a few months now and i took good care of them, but a while ago i went to put them on and the bridge at the top of the headset snapped. They were under no where near enough stress for a set of headphones of this price range to break and i have found this with other sennheiser headphones too like cables fraying and size adjusters becoming weak and not holding the size you want and then snapping. There is also not a speck of quality materials to be seen, it is all the cheap plastic you would get on the £20 rip off. This was a general theme of my experiance with these headphones that in every aspect of them they had skimped on quality and finish. For example the sound had a complete lack bass and volume that i could hear background noise from my walk back from school everyday even with the noise cancelling on (which also messed up the already pitiful sound quality).

Sounds come across well and are accurately reproduced. The noise cancelling is a real must have in noisy environments. Bluetooth is easy to set up and rarely drops out. The only drawback that i’ve noticed is that it is rather too easy to phony call when the bluetooth is on and you are trying to change media track or volume. All in all i’m happy with my purchase.
