Lenovo G710 17 : From a gamers perspective

If you don’t like windows 8. I just bought one of these laptops and was planning to do the same as mr. Davis and install my copy of windows 7 pro rather than use the awful 8. However, before doing this i googled ‘make windows 8 look like windows 7’. A few minutes later i had downloaded and installed the free software, ‘classic shell’ and now i have windows 8 user interface looking just the same as windows 7. It does the job a treat and now i don’t have to spend half a day re-configuring the laptop.

Best laptop i have ever used. . This laptop is really very nice. After i had stopped complaining about having to put in a new account for microsoft, which is a pain and i had stopped complaining about windows 8 which i do not like. The microsoft account finally worked and let me download the windows 8. Neither was really a problem, but it seemed to take a long time to get the microsoft account set up. Stick with it if you get this laptop. This is the best laptop i have worked with. It is easy to use and when you get rid of the junk apps, which go onto a storage list, which is great if you change your mind about them and want to try using them again, it is so easy to use. It is a great machine to work with.

While the lenovo’s matt textured finish is attractive (and pretty finger-print proof) the whole package seems to lack solidity. I bought this laptop to replace (only to bring the technology up-to-date) a 6-year old toshiba satellite pro 17′ laptop. Fundamentally, there is no perceptible difference in performance between the 2 when using the laptop for every-day uses ie word processing etc. The toshiba’s build quality is streets ahead of the lenovo. While the lenovo’s matt textured finish is attractive (and pretty finger-print proof) the whole package seems to lack solidity. For example, the lid flexes when you open the laptop up and the opening action will lift the chassis off the table. I make a point of holding the chassis down at one end and lifting the lid at the other end to equalise the torque. Picky, i know, but i just get the feeling the lid hinges are not built to last. The display is excellent and i mentioned that performance isn’t obvious in normal use. However, i run a couple of processor intensive sims (flight sim and railworks) and this machine handles them with relative ease (although i can’t quite get railworks running with all the stops out). Here are the specifications for the Lenovo G710 17:

  • Enter your model number
    to make sure this fits.
  • Stereo speakers with Dolby Advanced Audio certification for immersive sound
  • AccuType keyboard with individual rounded keys for comfortable and accurate typing
  • Energy Manager – protects the long-term durability of the battery and uses advanced energy-saving technology to increase time spent between charges
  • OneKey Recovery makes data backup and recovery simple
  • HDMI-out port to connect to larger screens

Superb, glad i didn’t spend twice as much. Very fast (quad core, 8 threads, 4x faster than my work desktop pc running ltspice). Double tapping the trackpad didn’t work half the time. Eventually i realised its simply a matter of dropping the double click speed in the windows mouse settings by one step, now works perfectly. The 1600×900 screen changes colour/contrast badly when tilted past about 20 degrees vertical, and slightly when past about 45 degrees horizontal, but for the price is very good and this is rarely a problem. It shouldn’t suffer from screen burn / image retention that some newer (ips?) screens may have?. The display is reflective gloss, and isn’t a touch screen. The keyboard isn’t backlit, but there’s a 17′ lamp nearby ;-)its weight isn’t too noticable at any time – until you want to move itthe base stays very cool (the base of my old netbook pc could almost burn you). Full size sd card slot on the left (sd card hangs out about half way when plugged in)the small stereo speakers on the top seem fine to me. 1 is a bit weird, but usable (windows-x and windows-e seem good shortcuts). Hopefully a free upgrade to windows 9 in october 2014?fits into a briefcase i already had. Good to have the built-in dvd drive for installing software, watching films, and creating a startup disk, and image backup of the c drive etc.

It was significantly better than i expected. It can run most games such as dota 2, payday etc. Uts also processes quickly and it means i can boot it up and start playing in a few minutes tops.

My g710 has exactly the specification detailed in the product description and represents terrific value for money, and i could hardly be more pleased with it. As a powerful general-purpose laptop it simply cannot be beaten at anything like the price. The installed os is windows 8. 1 with no option to downgrade to windows 7. I’d never even seen win 8 before receiving the g710, but a couple of hours fairly interesting and intriguing familiarisation have left me with no desire to change back to the older os. Lenovo have eased the change by pre-installing the start menu application pokki, look for the white house symbol on the desktop task bar. Pokki provides very convenient access to apps and to things such as device manager, network & sharing etc that windows has always kept hidden away in control panel, and there is even an option in its settings menu to boot to the desktop rather than to the infamous metro start screen. The best tip i can give before you start windows 8 for the first time is to make sure in advance you have a microsoft id, because you will need one.

17 in good for split screens and using excel spreadsheets. Cons – too bulky and heavy when travelling. Makes my hand luggage overweight. But perfect for home or office use.

Item returned, not a windows 8 fan, and refused to struggle with the software.

Excellent value for money, feels well made. Nice keyboard with good feel to key presses. If i had any criticism it would be that the indicator lights on the front are too small and an illuminated power key would have been a nice touch. But that’s just me being “picky”nice bright large screen, no problem running photo editing software.

Good cheap laptop which is fast and copes with large. Good cheap laptop which is fast and copes with large databases for work. Not all features present (e. Docking station facility) so only 1 additional screen possible but it is not a top of the range.
