I had to have a white sound plinth to fit in with our completely white decor so the choice for research was severely restricted. However, having made a shortlist i then visited several specialists to listen to as many as i could, including a few which weren’t available in white. The canton stood out markedly from everything else, apart from the non-white sonos sound bar which was £200 more. It looks good, discreet and stylish, solidly built (this is not a flimsy piece of kit) and generally i am very pleased with the sound for both music and tv. I used to have an amazing separates sound system filling up two cabinets with speakers (black) on top, but having converted to digital this was the final piece in the jigsaw to replace the two black speakers. Admittedly the sound is not as good as the old system, which cost thousands of pounds 30 years ago, but it is still good and takes up a tiny fraction of the space. The reason for not giving it 5 stars: the bass has been turned down to the minimum (it is graded from -6 to +6) as otherwise the boom-boom on some music tracks can be to some ears distracting/annoying. Having done that it is perfectly acceptable. Although i purchased a tv wall bracket so that the plinth could sit below, i have ended up keeping the tv on one cabinet and the plinth 1.
I bought it after reading a review in ‘what hifi’ and it is way better than my tv audio. However, i am a bit disappointed with its sound. The mid tones, especially vocals, are a bit underwhelming unless i jack the sound and then the bass is overwhelming. However, quite often its the compressed nature of the sound track that’s at fault, not the canton.
Quick easy set up using the optical lead enclosed. Be sure to remove the plastic caps at either end of the lead. Dying to see what this baby was capable off in regard to cinema surround sound in my lounge measuring 4m x 5m and placed in the centre. I placed my favourite action film and i was blown away with clarity watching the hurt locker, and explosions actually sounded real, full of bass and realism. Next i went into bluetooth mode and quickly paired with my iphone 5s to listen to some music. Again i was not disappointed listening to nothing else matters – metallica, one thing i will say is you need to have the volume set quite high like 67 or 70 to get a good return hence the 4 stars.
An instant improvement over the tv sound. Nice bass and a big confident sound easy to set up.
I chose this soundbase for a couple of reasons; it’s to fit into an alcove beneath a new 40′ tv (ie: not enough width/space for a long soundbar), it doesn’t require a separate sub (the wires for a remote sub-bass things look cluttered), and the reviews of its audio quality were excellent. Out of the box, i managed to get the system installed within minutes. Connected to the tv, then programmed the canton dm50 with the tv’s remote so we only need the one remote so my wife doesn’t complain too much. Results: the soundbase fits perfectly under the tv-stand – literally looks like they were made for each other(and worth remembering to check measurements beforehand ). It’s completely clean-looking – discreet and without trailing wires. And the sound is phenomenal. Crisp at the top end, punchy in the bass. I mean it not only makes my ps4 games sound like they’re supposed to (the guns in destiny really sound like they have oomph, and battlefront tie fighters have a proper throaty screech), it makes everyday stuff sound immense. Who knew the theme for pointless had that much sonic woof ?options to change the bass and treble to suit your own taste, and to select from three preset eqs to reflect your set-up – whether the soundbase is sitting in a shelving unit, or beneath a tv, etc) you can also choose from two audio-ranges (wide and narrow).
Reviews from purchasers :
- Incredible Sound
- great depth, with sufficient bass at the default setting
- VERY HIGH QUALITY SOUND BAR/PLINTH
I looked for something with really good, involving sound that didn’t fill the room with speakers or just amplified explosions and i found it. A really good product which is more subtle, rather than in your face, but still impressive. I have it sitting on a low cabinet with the tv mounted on top of it. I bought it because the sound from mewly acquired sony kdl 42w805 is not very good. Great to look at, but to listen. Run it in and take some trouble getting the right setting. You can choose from 3 positioning modes to optimise sound – in a cabinet,, on a cabinet with tv on it or on a cabinet with the tv wall mounted. I also prefer the stereo option to the surround option.
Had this for a month now, suburb sounds, easy to set up, blue tooth brilliant, good deep bass, vocals a pleasure to listen too.
