Canon legria hv40 hd camcorder. Preceding digicam was panasonic sd 3ccd minidv(£299. Have been producing film for ’bout 2yrs now and wished to up grade to hd. Was launched to filmmaking by using tape and have to-day a little something like eighty tapes(60min)all with valuable footage contained and so re-placement had to be minidv,(hv40 downconverts to sd),dropped the panasonic not too long ago, had it fixed and carries on to function good but 4yrs previous so who is familiar with what is up coming?(specially when minidv at entry-level is very well into stage-out). Dimensions was also an issue and so experienced to be suitably compact(fits in my jacket pocket). Utilised it two months in scotland by means of oct together with panasonic purely in order to assess outcomes and final results are great, previous 3ccd excellent was outstanding(for a starter), but the canon hd is much better. Managing is good and even though some operations are various to the panasonic this does not suggest they make the unit not possible and i know that when i’ve used it for a whilst, it will come to be as normal. Viewfinder would have been better if extendable(panasonic was), but establish high quality is superior, fits nicely in the hand and only serious advice is to shop about for very best cost. I paid £732 end september which by comparison was great(will hardly ever have an understanding of how some of these merchants hope to get double when all price ranges are in obvious perspective on comparison sites 1 earlier mentioned the other), but when pricing spare battery month later, a person website experienced introduced it down to £448.

I experienced this canon for 3 yrs. Utilised it first for home videos, afterwards for some professional production. I obtained rid of it in 2012 and moved to dslr for greater high quality and thoroughly manual control. This camcorder is ok but is not perfect. Initial- noise it can make when spins the tape. (just to add- the tape is/was a benefit for me but this is a diverse topic). I was not happy specifically since of that. Difficult to movie in dimmed space.

Peculiar how this incredibly same camera can be bought in the us for just £416. Surprise what magic further attributes are included all through all those couple of added miles from china?. Potentially it is the plug that helps make all the difference in cost :).

I bought this for £400 very last 12 months off amazon on the advice of my movie tutor and for its rate i appreciate it. I have manufactured four micro documentaries with is, using a rode ntg-2 microphone and pistol grip (also acquired from amazon). Its a bit fiddly at first but like all factors after you get used to it, it operates very nicely. For the value being quoted (£1,a hundred) go for the canon xa10 at £1,600, which enables you to film at 50mb, improved high-quality than this. This digital camera appears to be to change in selling price. Final september it was £900, then it dropped to £400 in november, then £350 and now its £1,one hundred so keep an eye out on its cost. For £400 it rocks and i have no complaints.

Canon legria hv40 high definition digital camcorder – black (10x optical zoom, two. 7 inch widescreen colour liquid crystal display)this is the next hv40 that i have owned as my 1st stolen. I preferred it so much that i obtained a further. I have owned this model for just about 2 years now and so significantly have not discovered a different to match it for price and specification. When i acquired my initial one particular, i also bought a pack of sony hd tapes. There is unquestionably no change in history/playback quality amongst regular or hd tapes, adhere to standard dv tapes, it is really not truly worth the substantial big difference in price. When capturing indoors, i advocate you use the canon wd-43 broad converter. Even so, this is not low-cost and there are generic alternate options out there which i haven’t however analyzed. I also recommend the use of an external microphone for top quality audio.

Canon LEGRIA HV40 High Definition Digital Camcorder – Black (10x Optical Zoom, 2.7 Inch Widescreen Colour LCD) : Great video but build quality concerns. We bought the hv40 as a replacement for our ageing sony trv330e, plumping for dv tape as we’re hopeless at making time to edit captured video to disk. After much agonising and having already purchased a canon digital camera we decided that the best option would be the hv40 rather than the hv30 on the basis that its a long term investment and better to get the “bells ‘n whistles” now. As an aside, finding dv tape cameras or those with a larger price tag in shops is nigh on impossible so you’re increasingly buying on reputation and third party (biased?) reviews. The hv40 a significantly smaller camera than our old sony which is nice however this comes at the cost of some build quality specifically the tape door and the lcd screen. The tape door doubles as a securing point for the hand grip and the locking mechanism does not have a sufficient engagement to avoid some “slap” between the door and the case. The movement is less than 1mm but its enough to affect confidence. Used to the substantial feel of the sony, the lcd screen feels vulnerable to heavy handed treatment as its only 1/2 the depth however the displayed image is very good. We also noticed some noise made by the movement of the lens groups when the unit is moved. To save battery power we generally prefer to use the view finder whilst filming but the facility on this camera does not encourage its use as it is too close to the camera body and has no soft padding for the eye.

I bought this for £400 last year off amazon on the recommendation of my video tutor and for its price i love it. I have made 4 micro documentaries with is, using a rode ntg-2 microphone and pistol grip (also bought from amazon). Its a bit fiddly at first but like all things once you get used to it, it works very well. For the price being quoted (£1,100) go for the canon xa10 at £1,600, which allows you to film at 50mb, better quality than this. This camera seems to vary in price. Last september it was £900, then it dropped to £400 in november, then £350 and now its £1,100 so keep an eye out on its price. For £400 it rocks and i have no complaints.

Canon legria hv40 hd camcorder. Previous camera was panasonic sd 3ccd minidv(£299. Have been making film for ’bout 2yrs now and wanted to upgrade to hd. Was introduced to filmmaking via tape and have to-day something like 80 tapes(60min)all with useful footage contained and so re-placement had to be minidv,(hv40 downconverts to sd),dropped the panasonic recently, had it repaired and continues to work fine but 4yrs old so who knows what’s next?(particularly when minidv at entry-level is well into phase-out). Used it two weeks in scotland through october alongside panasonic purely in order to compare results and results are good, previous 3ccd quality was excellent(for a beginner), but the canon hd is better. Handling is good and although some operations are different to the panasonic this does not mean they make the unit impossible and i know that when i’ve used it for a while, it will become as natural. Viewfinder would have been better if extendable(panasonic was), but build quality is good, fits nicely in the hand and only real advice is to shop around for best price. I paid £732 end september which by comparison was good(will never understand how some of these retailers expect to get double when all prices are in clear view on comparison sites one above the other), but when pricing spare battery month later, one site had brought it down to £448.

Very pleasant to use and capable of making great videos. I agree with all the praise. I have since changed to windows xp pro 64 bit and, to my dismay, cannot find any drivers for it. I changed in order to be able to use my 16 gig of ram. This is almost beyond belief. Yes, i have contacted canon.

I have had the canon hv 40 for approx 3. I am pleased with the picture in terms of quality and clarity. However on using sony hdv tapes , purchased at the same time, the playback will sometimes feeze with a sound interuption. This according to the manual is symptons of a dirty video head. As it occured within 3 mins of usage, i discounted this. I contacted canon and explained the problem. They suggested a different make of tape or a new tape of the same type, this i did, to no avail. I have tried a panasonic hdv tape and this appears to not freeze with same frequency, one freeze in 12 mins of recording.

Canon legria hv40 high definition digital camcorder – black (10x optical zoom, 2. 7 inch widescreen colour lcd)this is the second hv40 that i have owned as my first stolen. I liked it so much that i purchased another. I have owned this model for almost 2 years now and so far have not found another to match it for price and specification. When i bought my first one, i also bought a pack of sony hd tapes. There is absolutely no difference in record/playback quality between standard or hd tapes, stick to standard dv tapes, it’s not worth the massive difference in price. When shooting indoors, i recommend you use the canon wd-43 wide converter. However, this is not cheap and there are generic alternatives out there which i haven’t yet tested. I also recommend the use of an external microphone for top quality audio.

It seems to me that most of the reviews of this device miss the point. The hv40 produces great output but in tape format. Some see this as a disadvantage (sure, it takes a full hour to transfer a single tape to a pc) but, in my opinion, the advantages of tape greatly outweigh this:1 – sooner or later your camera will malfunction, be stolen or simply be dropped. With a tape machine, up to an hour of footage is at risk (not 20-30 as would be the case when using a 240gb hard disk monster. Sd cards are still much more expensive than tape, so i don’t think they offer a reasonable alternative);2 – dv tapes (don’t bother with hdv equivalents – they’re unnecessary) are cheap and last for at least 10 years so, as your competence increases, you can re-edit old footage and produce still better output; and3 – the load on the editing pc is dramatically less than when processing avchd output from hard disk or sd machines. You may well avoid a pc-upgrade if you stick with tape. I have just two negative comments:1 – the hv40 seems very expensive when compared with the older hv30 (essentially the same device); and2 – a firewire port is needed for editing (becoming increasinly rare on modern laptops). Otherwise, the hv40 is just great.Buy one while they are still available.
