Bose soundtouch 20 series iii – the pain and the glory. This is a substantial piece of kit as you would expect from the company whose shares are majority owned by the massachusetts institute of technology (mit). This reviewer has an old bose cd player which sounds as good as the day it was purchased 10 years ago. As a piece of technology, it is simple. You put in a cd and it plays, wonderfully filling the room with sound. To get to this desired state with the bose sound touch 20 series is not so straightforward. Part of the problem are the instructions which tend to optimistically suggest that you link up any bluetooth on a product like an i-phone and it will connect. While it may register on your phone or tablet ‘settings’ do not waste your time trying to pair. You have to download the sound touch app which as other reviewers have indicated is a right royal pain in the jacksy. The bose boast that this ‘takes just minutes to configure and establish a wi-fi connection’ is being economical with the truth.
Replaced my old wireless solution. Replaced my old wireless solution. The android app works really well. All the family use this app and bose.
I have the soundtouch 20 in my kitchen and the soundtouch 130 connected to my tv. I did a huge amount of research before purchasing – it came down to bose vs heos vs sonos. I have some experience of sonos through friends but none of heos or bose prior to these purchases. I eventually chose bose because of big advantages with the soundbar connected to the tv (has hdmi inputs/outputs, true dts processing, 4k pass through etc, sonos has none of these). I am not disappointed at all – the sound is amazing and they function very well through the soundtouch apps or remote controls. Some people complain that they have wifi connection issues but that reflects their home wifi network or the spotify app, not these units. I recently invested in a good home router (asus approx. £130) and have absolutely no problems with music through spotify or internet radio or from my pc (in quite a large house). The pre-set buttons are so useful and can be programmed to anything (i have some as radio stations and some as current albums i like). Here are the specifications for the Bose SoundTouch 20 Series III Wireless:

Expemsive but really worth it.
A very good easy-to-use system by the classic bose. The app works well and is easy to understand and use, plus i understand an upgrade to the app is about to be launched. The speaker has the usual bose good build quality, and this white version looks extremely elegant in the lounge. As with all the bose soundtouch systems, this has bluetooth for anything you cannot access through the app itself – such as apple music, amazon music uk, many podcasts and audiobooks. So the incorporation of bluetooth is really useful for those and is a major omission in the sonos systems. I have been in contact with bose who tell me that amazon music uk (it already supports the us version) is coming ‘by january’, although they wouldn’t be drawn further on apple music other than to say they are working with apple on this. However the soundtouch 20 does stream your itunes music from your apple computer via wifi and the bose app without any difficulties whatsoever, so again this omission is not actually a dead end. It just doesn’t yet do it directly without your computer being on and involved in the process. So basically there is a way to obtain pretty much everything you could want on this lovely bose speaker.
Reviews from purchasers :
- Fantastic speaker
- Replaced my old wireless solution. This works really well
- Great sound but not for a home theatre effect
Amazing sound and seamless spotify integration. This is a fabulous wi-fi / bluetooth speaker from bose and my only regret is that i waited so long before buying it. I’ve been using a bose soundlink mini bluetooth speaker for the past four years but having recently subscribed to spotify premium, i decided that i needed an upgrade to something more powerful and after doing some testing, the soundtouch 20 proved to be the best option for me. Being bose, the sound to my ears is perfect and there is the option to reduce the bass if you find it too heavy. It goes very loud and it’s so clear and it’s more than capable of filling a room and a massive upgrade from the already impressive soundlink mini. Setting it up and connecting it to my wi-fi was very straightforward. There is no battery – it needs to be plugged in to work. It has a handy remote control. The integration with spotify premium is seamless and you can assign playlists or individual albums to the six pre-sets buttons on top of the speaker. All you then need to do is press the button and without the need for any devices whatsoever, whatever you assigned to the button from spotify will play.
It’s a bose so what i expected. However there have been some negative comments so my experience was great. Setting up and getting the app, taking the bass down slightly, etc quick and problem free. Personally i will only use the blue tooth so cannot see the value in the presets, wifi aspects. I spent a lot of time, in fact far too much researching umpteen blue tooth speakers for the ‘best’ sound quality. I am not an exoert but it sounds mighty fine to me, plenty of power for home listening do that time was wasted.
